Michael Ginsberg was heading home from dinner at his favorite restaurant when the unthinkable happened.

Easton police said he was hit by a 2012 Hyundai sedan while crossing Foundry Street along Route 106 Sunday night.

The 84-year-old was six minutes away from home.

"The girls heard a boom and then you see all the cars stopped," said Ever Amaya, owner of La Familia Restaurant.

Amaya said Ginsberg was more than just regular of the restaurant.

"He was here every day for lunch and dinner," said Amaya. "He loved fish and chips."

First responders found Ginsberg in the road with "traumatic" injuries. He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton, where he died from his injuries.

Police said the 24-year-old driver who struck Ginsberg remained at the scene and was cooperating with investigators.

"Accidents like that can happen because there's no sidewalks on the street either and it's kind of dark," said Amaya.

Easton police haven't said whether Ginsberg was in a crosswalk.

Amaya showed NBC 10 surveillance footage of the moments leading up to the collision. The video shows a man attempting to cross the street on Foundry with oncoming traffic moving in both directions. There is no crosswalk or sidewalks connecting La Familia to the other side of the road.

"He was crossing the street because he lives like a block from here," said Amaya. "He used to come a million times so it's sad that last night was the last."

Amaya said Ginsberg's daughters stopped by the restaurant on Monday.

"The daughters came in today to thank everybody," he said. "Saying thank you to the girls like, 'You guys take care of Dad,' and said he like he was part of the family."
