Today is the final day of February, and it is safe to say that winter is going out like a lion.

The beginning of meteorological spring officially starts on March 1st. While we expected to round out the 2022-2023 winter season with some of the lowest snow accumulations in Rhode Island state history, snow this morning is stacking up quickly to quash those statistics.

Just before 9 a.m., snow totals are coming in well within the 4 to 8 inch mark as forecasted.

Most of the snow accumulations are expected by the end of the typical morning commute (9-10 a.m.) but light snowfall for the rest of the day is still expected.

Still, the remainder of the snow through the daylight hours will not accumulate as well due to a higher sun angle and smaller snowflakes.

As a result, a widespread 4 to 6 inches of snow is expected, with some of those higher totals for higher elevations northwest and west of Providence.

Snowfall tapers off after the evening commute.
