A woman was shot and killed Monday afternoon in a home in Providence, marking the city's first homicide of the year.

The shooting was reported at about 2 p.m. at a home on Prudence Avenue. Police said they believe the woman was home alone.

Police told NBC 10 the woman was in her 30s, but did not have any further information regarding her identity.

Acting Police Chief Oscar Perez told NBC 10 News one person was taken into custody.

One resident told NBC 10 she heard some yelling and screaming, and seconds later, she heard gun shots.

"Detectives are here, we're investigating it. We're going to conduct a thorough investigation. Maj. Lapatin is here with me today, and his squad and all the detectives are here. We're going to conduct an investigation and figure it out from there," Perez told NBC 10 crews on the scene.

Police said animal control also responded as there was a pet inside the home.
