It's a lesson Michael Gordon knows well as he stands in his furniture shop on Douglas Pike in Smithfield.

The new Knock on Wood Furniture store is filled with unique unfinished pieces.

It’s about 10 minutes away from its old location, which was destroyed by a massive fire in December.

"Any day you wake up you got to be happy you're not facing a tragedy,” Gordon told NBC 10 News.

Flames took over the old spot on Lonsdale avenue in Lincoln, which used to be an old community mill hall.

The building had to be knocked down, but Gordon always said he had a plan to rebuild.

"Well, it’s like picking up a thousand pieces trying to figure out how to put it back together again. Where do you begin? Timing,” Gordon said.

Gordon said the community supported the dream to reopen.

The company has continued to accept and fulfill orders since the fire.

“It means so much that they are more than just customers, they are like extended family,” Gordon said.

The company recently found the spot to lease, and the second chance is bringing a new outlook.

"It's just a new beginning but we are energized that we are going to go forward with a lot of new ideas and a fresh look at thing,” he said.

Gordon said the store is hoping to bring in some new products as well to keep up with the times.
