Stonington police said an officer was seriously injured in a car crash Monday morning and was flown by helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital.

Police said the officer, a sergeant, was working a road detail on his day off along Route 184 when a car struck a cruiser at about 11 a.m.

The crash pushed the cruiser into the officer, who was outside the car.

"It's important that vehicles also traveling on the roads are keeping an eye out for emergency vehicles, emergency personnel, DOT workers as well, just being alert and keeping an eye on everything is super important to keep everyone safe on the road," said Deputy Chief Todd Olson.

Police said the officer was conscious and alert when he was taken to Rhode Island Hospital by helicopter. Police are not releasing the officer's name at this time, stating only that he is a sergeant and veteran of the department.

Police did not immediately know what injuries the officer had suffered.

The driver who struck the cruiser went to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London.

Several neighbors told NBC 10 that speeding can be an issue in the area.

"It's a pretty long straightaway and a lot of folks tend to want to get off the road quick," said one resident.

Route 184 was closed for crash reconstruction and has since reopened.

Because a member of the Stonington Police Department was injured, Connecticut State Police are now in charge of the investigation.

NBC 10's Gabrielle Caracciolo contributed to this report.
