Former Cranston Mayor Steve Laffey says he's running for president.
Laffey, a Republican, announced his run Thursday morning.
"I'm running because our country needs to directly confront its problems," he said in a YouTube video. "My party and the elected leaders of our country simply refuse to do so."
Laffey said he'll draw on his financial expertise to stop kicking the nation's money problems down the line.
"We don't need just a businessman. We don't need career politicians. We have a financial crisis, and we need specific solutions," Laffey said, directing people to visit his website.
Laffey was a two-term mayor of Cranston, but fell short in the 2006 primary in a run for Senate. He passed on a run for governor in 2010.
He now lives in Colorado.
Laffey would face former President Donald Trump in a Republican primary.
