Pawtucket police said a man who was shot was in critical condition but stable after surgery Wednesday.

The man, whose name was not released, was shot in an apartment at 41 Pidge Ave. before 7 a.m.

The department said officers found the 32-year-old man with what appeared to be two gunshot wounds to his chest.

Police said the man was rendered aid before being transported to Rhode Island Hospital.

The massive police scene wasn’t what neighbors expected to see first thing in the morning.

"At about 4:30 in the morning I woke up. There was a person yelling what I thought to be "jolo" like in a way calling someone, and he walked out of this door he was wearing all blue and he walked back around the house and walked that way," said Aaron Brissette who lives nearby.

A person of interest was taken into custody on unrelated drug charges, police said.

An NBC 10 News crew saw police close off the scene, and a Pawtucket Crime Scene Investigation van arrived.

Two dogs were removed from the residence. Two cars sitting in the driveway were also towed.

Neighbors we spoke to say the house typically has new tenants every year but it's usually a pretty quiet neighborhood.

"It's a quiet, nice neighborhood, so if something violent did happen it would be shocking," said Christine Baumgarthuber, who lives in the area.

The shooting remains under investigation.
