A housing nonprofit on Monday released a community vision for the neighborhoods of central Providence.

ONE Neighborhood Builders released the Central Providence Roadmap, which seeks to outline a shared community vision for the nine neighborhoods of central Providence.

The organization said the roadmap was made with the help of 60 community organizations, leaders, and residents in those neighborhoods.

“Too many of our neighbors in Central Providence have been held back because of community-level conditions that are rooted in structural racism. These barriers can deny families access to quality education, affordable housing, good jobs, and adequate health care. Residents and organizations have been working for decades to remove these barriers. This collective effort represents an approach for bringing folks together and aligning on the overall strategy and mission,” said Jennifer Hawkins, ONE|NB President and Executive Director in a statement.

The executive summary of the report says the plan will follow three pillars and six north star values to guide the region for the next decade.

Pillar 1 – Meeting Foundational Needs

  • Everyone has a safe and affordable place to live.
  • Everyone has access to the resources they need to be healthy and well.

Pillar 2 – Supporting Mobility Drivers

  • Every young person is ready to learn, and our systems are ready to receive them.
  • Everyone who wants to start or grow their own business has the opportunity to do so.
  • Everyone has access to dignified, sufficient, and sustaining employment.

Pillar 3 – Building Power and Capacity

  • Everyone is equipped and empowered to take action to affect change in their community.

The nonprofit deals with affordable housing and health equity.

“There are some that who may write of collaborations like this as just a lot of talk but not much action, and honestly that cynicism has been reenforced in the past, there are a lot of plans sitting on shelves,” said Hawkins on Thursday. “But this plan isn’t get tucked away on a bookshelf or a forgotten link on a website. We are focused on results not rhetoric.”
