Basketball coach Ed Cooley thanked Friars fans and supporters on Tuesday after deciding to leave Providence College for Georgetown University.

Speculation around Cooley’s decision reached a peak of scrutiny on Monday as many waited to see where the men’s basketball head coach would end up.

He ultimately decided to take his talents to Washington, D.C., and lead the Hoyas.

“FRIARTOWN! What a ride this has been,” wrote Cooley in a series of tweets on Tuesday. “We created something so special for this school and this city when no one believed we could.”

He thanked the fans, student body, alumni, and many others in his tweet.

He highlighted his gratitude to PC's president, the Rev. Kenneth Sicard, and athletic director Steve Napolillo.

Napolillo said on Monday that Cooley helped the program achieve a high level of success and that PC would search for a new great coach.

The athletic director criticized Georgetown for poaching their coach.

Cooley also thanked his players, current and former.

“Thank you for putting it all on the line each and every single game in black and white. Thank you! God Bless. Go Friars!,” Cooley ended the Twitter thread.

Many of the replies to his thread were not complimentary, but some did thank him for his time with the program.

Cooley is a native of Providence and signed with Providence College in 2011.
