Rhode Island lawmakers introduced legislation at the State House to create a permanent, annual sales tax holiday in Rhode Island.

The holiday is being touted as "Christmas in July in RI," and would fall on the second Saturday and Sunday in July each year.

Items below $2,500 would be exempt from the 7% sales tax in Rhode Island.

There are exceptions to this, including gas, tobacco products, electricity, cars, steam, or telecommunications.

“Other states have seen success with sales tax holidays in stimulating their economies,” stated Rep. Jon D. Brien, the sponsor of the bill, in a release. “Christmas in July in RI would be a nice hook to lure in shoppers from nearby states to Rhode Island. Not only is it a great way to give back to businesses in the state, but it would help out others, as well, since July is the perfect time to enjoy the state’s restaurants, beaches and other attractions.”

The bill has been referred to the House Finance Committee.
