A memorial service was held Wednesday for an American hero, Peter Reed, who was killed while volunteering as a medic in Ukraine earlier this month.

"He called us the week before and he just said, 'I'm completely back in my element. I love it here. I want to do this for the rest of my life," said Chandler Reed, Peter's brother.

After serving two tours in Afghanistan, Reed devoted his life to humanitarian work, first in Iraq and then for two months in Ukraine.

"He loved and was naturally at the center of attention," said Alex Potter, Reed's wife. "That's what initially drew me to him: his big personality, his charisma, his command of a situation. But eventually it was his jokes, his hugs, his kisses on my forehead."

He would have celebrated his first wedding anniversary with his wife later this month.

"He was my best friend and adventure buddy," Potter said.

They met during his work in Iraq, which was documented by NBC News.

"We have kissed, danced and loved across the world in so many places. But not the whole world yet," Potter said.

Reed was a recent graduate of the Community College of Rhode Island.

The college released a statement calling him a hero and thanking him for his service and sacrifice.
