Burrillville police are investigating after a body was recovered from a partially-frozen pond this weekend, an incident that neighbors told NBC 10 News is rare.

Police said the woman's body was found partially submerged in the water at Little Round Top Pond.

"This is a terrible thing, terrible thing," Isabel Maynard said. "We never see it. I mean, this is a very, very, very rural, quiet road."

First responders worked for hours to recover the body from the partially frozen water.

A couple who came to check the ice for fishing Sunday morning made the discovery and called police. It's unclear how long the body was there before being found.

Police have not identified the deceased. They also haven't shared how she died or if her death is considered suspicious.

It comes just two months after a similar discovery was found in another Rhode Island pond.

In December, a person fishing on Carbuncle Pond reported finding a body.

Rhode Island State Police are leading that investigation. They're not releasing the name of the woman.

State police stated they have no reason to believe there is any relation to the body found in Burrillville.
