The Rhode Island Department of Administration said Wednesday that it has signed a short-term consulting contract with former Housing Secretary Josh Saal.

Saal resigned last month under criticism for the job he was doing.

Former Commerce Secretary Stefan Pryor was named his successor. Pryor's task is getting the department back on track.

"To assist with the operational and leadership transition, under the supervision of Secretary Pryor, Josh Saal will serve as a consultant for up to 3 months, terminating on April 25, 2023," a statement from state spokesperson Laura Hart said.

Hart said Saal will be paid for a minimum of 20 hours a week at an hourly rate of $105.

The contract also pays Saal's health insurance for up to three months at a cost of $823.07 a month.

"The state can terminate this agreement at any time before its three-month term with 30 days’ notice," Hart said.

The state had a similar contract with Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott after she stepped down as health director.
