An investigation remains tight-lipped after a Cole Middle School science teacher was placed on administrative leave earlier this week.

On Monday, East Greenwich Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Brian Ricca sent a letter to parents and faculty saying there were reports of alleged inappropriate behavior against science teacher Adam Scott.

A parent, who wanted to remain anonymous, tells NBC 10 that her daughters were in Scott’s eighth grade science class.

"My daughters were really shocked and surprised,” the parent said. "They said he was a good science teacher. He never seemed inappropriate. I interviewed them when I saw the news. They never had any issue with him."

The parent told NBC 10 she has not received any specific details about what may have happened.

“They haven't really told the parents anything,” she said.

“It seems like something happened really abruptly and immediately the school did what they needed to do and pulled him out so they could figure out what's going on," she added.

Ricca sent the following statement to NBC 10:

"The administration has received reports alleging inappropriate behavior. It is important to note that placing an employee on paid administrative leave is standard practice during an ongoing investigation, and it is not punitive or an indication of any wrongdoing."

Ricca said no additional information will be released at this time to protect the students and adults involved.

The parent said she’s confident the district will do the right thing, but she says it’s still a difficult conversation to have.

"They're trying to do their due diligence and keep our children safe and that made me feel good,” she said.

“I feel really sad that we live in a world where this sort of stuff happens and that our daughters and children have to be exposed to conversations about adults being inappropriate," she added.

Scott will remain on leave pending the outcome of an investigation.

“We want them to continue to be able to access their education. There's a gap, he was a science teacher, so we need to find suitable coverage and all that, but I’m sure they'll do that," the parent said.

Scott has been a teacher at the middle school for decades and is involved in Best Buddies and Special Olympics.

Four years ago, he received the Jefferson Award for his efforts with the school's nationally recognized Best Buddies program. NBC 10 has been involved with the Jefferson Awards.
