Taylor Faria and Neil Treglia are remembering their 5-year-old playful husky named Niko.

His black collar sat close by on the table.

"He had a lot of time left, it's just really cruel," Treglia said.

Niko's owners told NBC 10 News he got loose a few days ago.

They called East Providence police, who said they found the dog about 12 hours later, not too far away from home near Forbes and Lunn Street.

Niko had a small cut on his head and was panting.

"He was a little funny," Treglia said. "He had his head sort of cowered in the guy's yard, so we thought he got into a fight with a wild animal, or he got hit."

The couple took Niko to the vet and learned he'd been shot with a pellet or small caliber round.

They made the difficult decision to put Niko down.

"He was not dangerous by any means necessary," Faria said.

They were left confused and wondering why someone would hurt their beloved pet.

"We want some type of justice, answers, closure," Treglia said. "We know it's not going to bring him back, but this hurts. He was part of our family, you know what I mean."

Police are investigating the incident but Niko's family hopes whoever is responsible will come forward.

"If you could say 'Hey, it might have been me, it was a mistake' it means more than being quiet,'" Faria said.

The couple said they hope a similar incident doesn't happen to anyone else.

Police are looking for surveillance video in the area of Forbes Street.

Those with information are asked to contact Det. Genevieve O’Connell at 401-435-7600.
