WRENTHAM, Mass. (WJAR) — Wrentham police are bringing attention to the "awesome judgement," of two 12-year-old boys who discovered a grenade while out in the woods.
According to Wrentham Police Chief Bill McGrath, Kevin Castaneda and Jackson Allen were out hiking on a trail Wednesday when they spotted a pile of trash.
While sorting through the litter, the duo found a hand grenade.
Instead of picking up the grenade, Castaneda and Jackson took a picture of it with their phones, made a mental note of their location, and ran home to tell their parents.
Wrentham police and fire responded to the location, along with the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad.
The Bomb Squad determined the grenade had been hollowed out and was not live at the time the boys found it.
It's not clear how the grenade ended up in the woods.
