A central figure in Operation Plunder Dome, the federal investigation into corruption at Providence City Hall in the late 1990s, has died.

NBC 10's Gene Valicenti reported that Frank Corrente, who was chief of staff to Providence Mayor Vincent "Buddy" Cianci, died Wednesday night.

Corrente was recorded on undercover video taking an envelope of cash from Anthony Freitas, a Providence businessman who wore a wire for the federal government. Freitas, feeling cheated on a lease contract with the city’s school department because he refused to pay a bribe, went to the FBI.

The video was obtained before trial and aired by NBC 10 I-Team reporter Jim Taricani, who was later sentenced to home confinement for refusing to divulge his source of the videotape.

Cianci, Corrente, and four other City Hall insiders were indicted on federal corruption charges.

Freitas died last year at age 73. Cianci died in 2016.
