The driver and passenger of a dirt bike are dead following a crash in Cranston on Wednesday night.

Cranston police said the accident occurred on Wheeler Ave and Broad Street and involved a dirt bike-style motorcycle and a SUV.

The male and female on the dirt bike were transported to Rhode Island Hospital where they were pronounced dead.

Police said the driver of the car is doing ok.

Cranston Mayor Ken Hopkins told NBC 10 the driver of the car was on her way to pick up her daughter at home which is just a few feet away from where the collision took place.

Hopkins said this is a huge loss for the city of Cranston, just two days into spring.

"This is a time of year when the motorcycles come out, the bikes come out, maybe they were just out for a nice ride for the evening," Hopkins said. "You know, I always value the time that I have because you never know what's going to happen. It's unfortunate tonight and I grieve and I feel bad for the family."

According to police, the dirt bike involved was not registered.

Police said they expect the case to wrap up quickly given the physical evidence and circumstances of the crash.
