Just 388 votes determined the winner of the mayor's race in Attleboro.

Cathleen DeSimone beat her three opponents in Tuesday's election. In just a few weeks, she will be moving her things into the corner office at City Hall.

"I was happy and excited and overwhelmed and tired but I'm relentlessly optimistic about the future of Attleboro," DeSimone told NBC 10 News.

The former city councilor started campaigning months ago when former Mayor Paul Heroux announced his run for Bristol County sheriff.

She said she knocked on hundreds of doors and shook thousands of hands in every corner of the city.

"At the end of the day, signs don't vote, endorsements don't vote, it all depends on who turns out and frankly every single vote is just about the best endorsement you can get," DeSimone added.

She beat Jay DiLisio, who has served as acting mayor since early January, as well as John Davis and Timothy Barone.

DeSimone told NBC 10 that her focus now is the future, which includes a new budget for the city.

“It is budget time, so getting a budget in that is fair and appropriate is number one on the priority list,” she added.

As a parent herself, DeSimone said she's going to work to bring more mental health resources into the city's schools and she hopes to partner it with a program to help kids get outside.

"I know for me when I'm not in a good place I go outside and mother nature has a great way of putting things back in perspective," said DeSimone.

She will be sworn in to office later this month.
