Charles McPherson

The Journey Home

Join us for this week-long homecoming celebration!

Charles McPherson was born in Joplin and moved to Detroit at the age of nine, where he studied with renowned pianist Barry Harris and started playing jazz professionally at age 19. From there, McPherson’s career would take off, expanding rapidly and taking him to concert venues, festivals, orchestras, and jazz halls across the globe. Having played with some of the best groups and artists that the jazz industry has to offer, McPherson has become a highly revered saxophonist whose work continues to astound and impress.

McPherson’s homecoming is a collaborative endeavor including Connect2Culture, Langston Hughes Cultural Society, The Minnie Hackney Community Service Center of Joplin, Post Art Library, Pro Musica, Spiva Center for the Arts, and Visit Joplin.
