Restorative Justice In Action Series: Crisis Intervention
Facilitated by the DC Peace Team

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2021:  7:00pm - 8:30 pm EST
Location: ONLINE (Zoom link provided about 24 hrs. before the session)
Contact: Christian Paris, cp245878@gmail.com

Restorative Justice In Action or Restorative practices (RJ) is a social science that studies how to improve and repair relationships between people and communities. The purpose is to build healthy communities, increase social capital, decrease crime and antisocial behavior, repair harm and restore relationships. Its applications will be visited in this series in the following fields: community healing, criminal justice, education, crisis intervention, and work & family.

This session will be a shared space for application of restorative justice core theory, and more specifically, in situations calling for crisis intervention and deescalation.  Facilitators will NOT be training participants in crisis intervention strategies or tactics. Rather, DCPT facilitators encourage shared learning by 1) sharing their experiences of applying RJ to the world of crisis intervention, and then by 2) facilitating an open dialogue where participants explore ways in which a philosophy of healing can be better incorporated into the crisis situations we encounter.

Participants with prior or active experience are encouraged to register. The sessions will also be ideal for those simply curious or wanting to learn. Our goal is to inject confidence in participants to take the methods of restorative justice (healing) and apply it to their areas of focus/interest/employment, regardless of stage in their professional journey.

Objectives:
1) Awareness - raise awareness of restorative practices' effectiveness in crisis situations
2) Reflection - provide space for reflection and sharing of personal experiences
3) Inspiration -  encourage those wanting to do the work to expand their crisis intervention "tool belt" by providing RJ-related resources, opportunities to serve with the DCPT, and a new network of practitioners

This training is provided by the DC Peace Team, which empowers ordinary civilians to increasingly serve their communities particularly as nonviolent peacekeepers, and by extension as peacemakers and peacebuilders. The DC Peace Team lives this mission by: deploying unarmed civilian protection and accompaniment units, providing training in various nonviolent skills, and facilitating dialogues and restorative justice approaches.
