One of President Donald Trump's top lawyers has resigned from her law firm after participating in a phone call in which Trump attempted to overturn the election result in Georgia, Insider has learned.

Cleta Mitchell wrote in a letter to her clients on Tuesday that she was resigning from the blue-chip firm Foley & Lardner. Insider obtained a copy of the resignation letter.

"As you are probably aware, there has been a massive pressure campaign in the last several days mounted by leftist groups via social media and other means against me, my law firm, and clients of the law firm, because of my personal involvement with President Trump, his campaign and the White House, related to the November 3 general election in Georgia," Mitchell wrote. "After discussions with my firm's management, I have decided that it is in both of our interests that I leave the firm."

Mitchell participated in the call on Saturday, in which Trump pressured Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to "find" votes to overturn the state's result.

Shortly after the call became public, Foley & Lardner distanced itself from Mitchell and the president.

"We are aware of, and are concerned by, Ms. Mitchell's participation in the January 2 conference call and are working to understand her involvement more thoroughly," the firm said on Monday.

Mitchell did not immediately return a request for comment on Tuesday afternoon.

Shortly after Mitchell sent her resignation letter, her bio was taken down from the law firm's website.

"Cleta Mitchell has informed firm management of her decision to resign from Foley & Lardner effective immediately," said Dan Farrell, a spokesman for Foley & Lardner, in a statement to Insider. "Ms. Mitchell concluded that her departure was in the firm's best interests, as well as in her own personal best interests.  We thank her for her contributions to the firm and wish her well."

Mitchell is a veteran lawyer for conservative Republicans and tea partyers, with deep ties on the right. Mitchell downplayed her work trying to help Trump throw out the election results in previous interviews, The Daily Beast reported. But Mitchell's role was revealed publicly after The Washington Post published audio of Trump's Georgia phone call

Since then, activists on Twitter have called for her to be disbarred. Mitchell blamed that social media barrage, akin to Twitter hurricanes often spurred by the president himself, for her decision.

"I do not wish to distract the Firm, my colleagues or our clients with the ongoing campaign of hateful, vile, and offensive attacks that have inundated our firm and clients, and which I know will persist from these left wing pressure groups. That is not good for anyone and especially not good for our clients," Mitchell wrote in her resignation letter.
