Ferguson: Breaking down potential FA QB fits

’Tis the season for eggnog, avoiding that final emergency trip to the mall before Christmas and big CFL decisions.

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://www.cfl.ca/2021/12/20/ferguson-breaking-potential-fa-qb-fits/

Zach stays in Winnipeg, they gave him the opportunity after all the injury uncertainty, he gave them the Grey Cup(s) after years of suffering. If they can keep most of that O-Line intact, to keep Collaros upright, it’s the right fit for both. Plus the team’s record since he joined them is ridiculous.

Enjoyed watching Rider fans "squirm" did you. Another tsn jerk heard from.

Once again, Stamps develop; everyone else poaches. Nothing changes

What a load of crock. What did the Stamps have to do with: Mike Reilly, Trevor Harris, Vernon Adams. MBT, Matt Nichols, Zach, Massoli, Dane Evans …? Get your head out of your red and white bag and take a look at the real world for a change.

Nichols has got to be done, I think we'll see him with a clipboard next year. His last comeback was how many minutes long?(Answer: not many)

lol who has done better then Calgary developing QBa??? / Come on now you know what I meant

Did the writing in this story need to be so convoluted?

I could see someone at MLSE deciding they should take a run at Collaros.

There were only 3 QBs that started a game last season that you could even argue were “developed” by Calgary. Hamilton alone had 3 different QBs start games for them all of which they clearly “developed” using your assumed logic.

Oh and of those three QBs your Stumps “developed” two of them threw more INT than TDs. Your three averaged 248 yrd/game while the Hamilton QBs averaged 255 yrd/game and their winning percentages were virtually the same.

This also does not include Toronto who turned out QBs like MBT, Zach Collaros, Cody Fajardo, Trevor Harris and Dakota Prukop who all started games in the CFL in 2021.

Most of those guys were brought in by Jim Barker.

If you have to ask that question after I already did …

This year more than one of our vets will likely test free agency. They ALL deserve a raise right? Once the dust settles and we run out of Cap space we probably won’t be in a position to get into a bidding war over any of these free agent backup quarterbacks. Mind you there’s always the possibility that some FA quarterback will WANT to play here for less money but that’s kinda pie in the sky thinking. It’s almost certain that barring a trade, the backup job behind Collaros will go to either McGuire or Brown.

Collaros will stay in the 'Peg but he’ll command about $500K iMO. Vernon Adams signed for $445K. The question is, with his injury history, how much hard money vs incentives. The big QB FA’s are Hamilton’s guys, whichever hits the market, Harris sitting out there & McLeod Bethel Thompson. As of now the only seats available are Edmonton out West, Ottawa & maybe TO if they want to replace McBeth. BUT Elk, when asked, refused to give Arbuckle a vote of confidence though they would discuss Cornelius. So, let me throw a couple of wild cards out there.

Calgary - They want to rework Bo’s deal for a 2nd time in 2 seasons. I don’t know what Maier’s getting BUT Huf’s not paying Bo’s bonus mid month. Bo won’t be released because Huf doesn’t want Bo in the West (read Elk) so, like Hughes before him, Huf would send him East. Dinwiddie would take him in a heartbeat &, unlike Hughes, won’t turn around & ship him West. Bo’s in a good situation as he knows he can end up in TO unless he’s shipped to Ottawa. But the RB’s new GM, Burke, comes from Hamilton & is likely going to pick up one of the TiCat QB’s.

Edmonton - They can always get Harris if they want a vet. How about Reilly? I’ve heard that they want to rework the deal there but Reilly, according to Campbell, hasn’t heard anything from him last I read on the Reilly situation. Remember, Reilly refused to play his cards in Edmonton till the final weekend though it was an open secret he was going to BC. So, if we’re a week away from free agency & nothing’s happening, does Campbell sign Harris, a guy’s he’s got a relationship with & move Reilly to Edmonton for some warm body (ies) to help shore up the OL/DL? Or does Jones wait him out to get released? Reilly wants to stay West & I don’t think he’d be disappointed to hook up with Jones.

Of course the likelihood is Bo & Reilly rework their deals. But they have all the cards. If they do nothing & force the teams to release them I can see Bo getting paid big bucks in Toronto & Reilly in Edmonton. Big question then, what happens to Arbuckle & his $340K in Edmonton? They’re not keeping him. The team with the most room to add him to the payroll with likely the smallest $$ invested in #1? Calgary.

Interesting… you’re thinking Bo could go. Probably out East. But this won’t happen until Free Agency. We’ll see if you’re right in February. Meanwhile, you have to run this scenario by Mrstallion otherwise it won’t get the Stampeders Group ‘Stamp’ of approval.

I think he’ll go before if they haven’t a reworked deal. He has a $100K bonus due this month. If there’s no deal, they have to release him or trade him & I think Huf will then try to trade him to an East club for something or release him. Or pay the $100K - that I would find unlikely. Remember Huf traded Burris in 2011 & he won a Cup 5 years later. But his totals had declined for 4 years. He traded Hughes in 2018 & Hughes had 31 sacks the next 2 years in Saskatchewan. After putting up 1,000+ yds in 2017, Messam was shipped to Regina. I think the most likely outcome is Bo & Huf work out a deal. But Hufnagel is not afraid to send away players while they’re still producing. I find the situation there quite intriguing because there may be quite the ripple effect should it happen. I’d like to know what Maier was paid because that could be quite telling. I do think he has to get Bo’s salary down because of the Maier signing.
