Top political scientist Jennifer Lawless appeared on GoLocal LIVE, where she discussed former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley's entrance into the GOP primary for the 2024 Presidential election -- and how Haley, who served as Ambassador to the United Nations under the Trump Administration, will navigate what will likely be a crowded field.

“The Republican field is going to be quite crowded and there are going to be many options for voters to choose from, and among those options will e a handful of people who are in their 50s and 60s so Nikki Haley is not going to be the unusual young whippersnapper in this race when you think about candidates like Ron DeSantis joining or Glenn Youngkin," said Lawless, who is the Chair of the Political Science Department at the University of Virginia.

“It’s hard to figure out who her voters are in the Republican primary for two reasons - the first is Republicans generally don’t like identity politics and so although they don’t have a problem with female candidates, they don’t have a problem with candidates of color, they’re usually not motivated to vote for candidates because of those demographic traits,” said Lawless. “So right off the bat, what might be an asset in the Democratic primary is probably a big nothing with the Republican party.”

“Second, she’s closely associated with the Trump Administration and she’s not willing to bash him by name, so it’s a little bit difficult to see how she positions herself and who her potential voters are going to be,” said Lawless.

“It’s really too early to really forecast anybody’s chances — it’s just that all of the non-Trump candidates are going to be competing for that same batch of voters,” she added.
