Growing Number of PC, URI, Bryant and Brown Players Are Entering the Transfer Portal
Friday, March 24, 2023
The Division I basketball transfer portal is flooded with players looking for more playing time and “greener” pastures with NIL monies. NIL is "Name, Image and Likeness" and describes the means through which college athletes are allowed to receive financial compensation.
Now, the number of players in the portal from the DI colleges is beginning to grow. Providence College has feasted on the portal the past two years, attracting stars like Bryce Hopkins and Devin Carter to name just two.
GoLocal has been tracking those entering the portal -- here are some of the details on how the transfer portal works and which players from the Rhode Island schools have entered

The Transfer Window
As of August 2022, a D1 athlete could enter the NCAA Transfer Portal only during specified time windows. They are as follows:
For fall sports, a 45-day transfer window begins with a given sport’s “championship selection” (i.e., bowl game announcements or release of NCAA tournament brackets).
For winter sports, a 60-day transfer window begins with a given sport’s championship selection.
For spring sports, a 45-day transfer window begins with a given sport’s championship selection.
Transfer Multiple Times
NCAA colleges allow transferring more than once. But some transfers could incur penalties, especially if you’re transferring to a four-year college for a second time. As an example, Brown star Desmond Cambridge transferred from Brown in 2019 to Nevada. Then, he transferred to Arizona State for this season.
The NCAA writes, "Let’s suppose you want to transfer to your third four-year school. Let’s also suppose that the previous two four-year colleges you attended offered your sport. In this hypothetical, the transfer is allowed but with a penalty of sitting out a year. That means you will not play and possibly not practice with the team for an entire year.
Now let’s look at another hypothetical. You’ve transferred from a four-year school to a junior college that’s only two years. Now you want to transfer back to a four-year school to finally complete your degree. In this scenario, you can transfer without penalty. Even though it will be your second time playing for a four-year school, it will be your first time transferring to one. If your grades and athletics are up to snuff, you can practice and play."
Now, Here is Who Has Entered the Portal By School:
Providence College: Jared Bynum, Senior
University of Rhode Island: Braysn Freeman, Sophomore (he had transferred to URI from George Washington University)
University of Rhode Island Sebastian Thomas, Sophomore
University of Rhode Island, Ishmael Leggett., Sophomore
University of Rhode Island Abdou Samb, Red Shirt Freshman
Bryant University, Joe Moon IV, Junior
Bryant University, Charles Pride, Senior
