Move over calamari — there could be a new state emblem.

A bill has been introduced by Representatives David Bennett, Michael Solomon, and Grace Diaz to make “rhythm and blues” the official state music.

“For purposes of this section, rhythm and blues is defined as music which contains elements of pop, soul, funk, 6 hip-hop and electronic music,” according to the legislation, which would establish the genre as the latest emblem in chapter four of Title 42 — State affairs and government — in state law.

It would follow the most recent additions following calamari as the “State appetizer” — which were “State insect” (American burying beetle); “State marine mammal” (seal); “State coral” (Northern Star Coral) and “State fossil” (trilobite).

Rhode Island, which hosts the annual “Rhythm & Roots Festival” each summer in Charlestown, boasts a Blues Preservation Society.

Will the bill get a committee hearing and make it to the floor for a vote? Stay “tuned.”
