Ed Cooley: “Sometimes in Life Change Is Needed”—PC’s AD Blasts Georgetown
Monday, March 20, 2023
Providence College's head basketball coach is working under a “lifetime” contract that pays a reported $3.8 million and hundreds of thousands in additional adverting compensation. But the sold-out AMP and the dollars no longer appear to be enough for Providence native Ed Cooley.
“I am going to have an open discussion with another school,” said Cooley in an interview on his coaches show on WPRI.
On Sunday, Cooley confirmed that he has spoken to Georgetown University officials.

Last season, Cooley was the national coach of the year.
“Sometime in life, change is needed for emotional stability and wellness and just because [you are] at a place, doesn’t mean everything is forever,” said Cooley.
“Providence has always been my dream job and I’ll continue to say that. Sometimes circumstances change and it has nothing to do with administrators, nothing to do with athletic directors,” said Cooley.
PC Athletic Director Has Harsh Words for Georgetown
On Sunday night, Steven Napolillo said he learned of Georgetown’s contact with Cooley at 11:30 AM that morning.
He criticized Georgetown for poaching another Big East team’s coach. He said of Georgetown's action, “It's a bad a bad look.”
Napolillo said the league is built on trust.
Timeframe
Cooley has refused to declare a timeline.
“All to do with what with I am thinking and what [my wife Nurys] is thinking to move her and I forward and with what we think is best for our family,” said Cooley.
In the new college basketball era, the timing is a disaster for Providence College to ensure it retains stars like Bryce Hopkins and Devan Carter — both sophomores — and to compete for top talent in the transfer portal.
