RI Connection

Two Rhode Islanders starred in Northeastern’s Beanpot win over Harvard on Monday night.

For the first time over the 70-year history of the tournament, Northeastern and Harvard met in the Beanpot championship.

And it was the first time that the title game was decided by a shootout.

It was two Rhode Islanders that led Northeastern to the 3-2 win.

Gunnarwolfe Fontaine of East Greenwich (see photo) scored two of the Huskies’ goals, including a third-period goal sending the game into overtime.

The junior was a 7th-round pick of the Nashville Predators in 2020.

Northeastern Defenseman Jayden Struble of Cumberland dominated at both ends. He anchored the defense and constantly pushed the puck into the Harvard end of the ice.

Struble is a senior and was a 2nd round pick of the Montreal Canadians in 2019.

Brown's Mike Martin in Hot, But He's No Weeb Ewbank

Mike Martin '04 became the winningest head coach in the history of Brown men's basketball, and the Bears beat Cornell 80-66 Saturday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center.

The win was the 134th of Martin's career, breaking the 54-year-old record previously held by Stanley Ward.

But, the most successful Brown basketball was Weeb Ewbank who coached Brown for one season (1946-47) and then focused on football. He coached the Jets to the Super Bowl III title. That was the Joe Namath game.

Mazzulla Is the Boss

It’s official — former Bishop Hendricken basketball player Joe Mazzulla is now part of Boston Celtics history.

The franchise made the announcement on Thursday.

“Joe Mazzulla is officially the 19th Head Coach in franchise history,” the club Tweeted Thursday morning.

Mazzulla had been named Interim Head Coach in September 2022 after previous head coach Ime Udoka was suspended for the season for violating team policies.

About Mazzulla

Following his days at Hendricken, he played at West Virginia, where he was captain of the team that went to the Final Four in 2010.

He then went on to be an assistant coach at Glenville State and then Fairmont State, before becoming an assistant coach for the Maine Celtics for a stint before returning to Fairmont as head coach.

Mazzulla first served as an assistant coach under Brad Stevens with the Celtics.

His father played at Bryant University and in South America following college.

Honesty and Breaking Down Stigmas

Kudos to John Fetterman and his staff who were honest and direct in discussing the Senator's health issues and hospitalization.

The WSJ reports:

Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman checked himself into Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to receive treatment for clinical depression, the second hospitalization for the freshman senator this month.

The senator’s chief of staff, Adam Jentleson, said Thursday that the Democratic lawmaker had experienced severe depression in recent weeks. Mr. Jentleson said that on Monday the attending physician for Congress, Dr. Brian P. Monahan, recommended inpatient treatment. On Wednesday, Mr. Fetterman checked himself into Walter Reed, which is located in suburban Maryland.

Mr. Fetterman “is receiving treatment on a voluntary basis,” Mr. Jentleson said. “After examining John, the doctors at Walter Reed told us that John is getting the care he needs and will soon be back to himself.”

Mr. Jentleson said that Mr. Fetterman has experienced depression off and on throughout his life.

Time for Brown to Show Us the Money

Brown University has cheated Providence for decades by refusing to make a reasonable payment.

In 2021, Yale University reset the standard by agreeing to pay New Haven more than $20 million a year.

Inflation

The consumer-price index climbed 6.4% in January from a year earlier, down from 6.5% in December, the Labor Department said Tuesday.

Economists were predicting the rate to drop to 6.2% or lower.

The inflation rate is likely to cause further action by the Federal Reserve. Fed Chair Jerome Powell has repeatedly said he wants to see inflation pushed down to 2%.

This marks the seventh straight month of cooling in annual inflation since peaking at 9.1% in June, the highest reading since 1981.

Nursing Homes

John E. Gage, President & CEO of the Rhode Island Healthcare Association (RIHCA), says that Rhode Island’s minimum staffing law for nursing homes is causing financial chaos to the nursing home operators.

“Rhode Island law states nursing facility residents are to receive an average of 3.58 hours of direct care per day (2.44 hours of which must be provided by CNAs) in the first year (2022) then 3.81 and 2.60 respectively from year 2 (2023) forward which gives Rhode Island the highest staff-to-patient ratio in the country. RIHCA’s concern was that this would not be attainable and would cripple nursing facilities and severely impact access to nursing facility care. This concern has been greatly exacerbated by the pandemic,” said Gage.

Rhode Island State Police

On December 13, GoLocal learned from multiple sources that a Rhode Island Sheriff had shot himself at the Rhode Island State Police shooting range.

The incident severely injured one of the sheriff's legs, and according to the report, the bullet nearly hit another sheriff.

The incident took place in the late afternoon on the 13th, and no Rhode Island State Police personnel were onsite during the incident.

GoLocal repeatedly requested the incident report, and this past week, the State Police released the report with limited redactions. GoLocal had filed two Access to Public Records Act requests. The first was rejected because the State Police said the investigation was not complete.

The name of the sheriff who fired the shot was redacted by the State Police, but GoLocal has learned it was Francisco Sanchez. He is 53 years old.

The self-inflicted shooting caused significant injury to his leg. READ MORE OF THE STORY

It should not be so difficult for a public agency to release information about an event that took place at a public facility about public employees.

Snow

This is the winter with virtually no snow in Rhode Island -- no shoveling, no sledding, and no winter wonderland.

There are still another six weeks, but if the winter continues on its spring-like path, will we get rebates because the cities and towns have virtually no plowing and salting costs?
