It’s you vs. you.

Most of the time, it’s not particular circumstances that hold up back from achieving what we want out of life, it’s the negative self-talk, the thoughts that occupy our minds, and the stories we tell ourselves that derail us.

When we let these obstacles hold us back is when we lose.

In other words, it’s you vs. you, and you can dictate the wins and losses based on your mindset and the inner stance you take.

Let’s face it, we all have the same obstacles in life. Time, the economy, distractions, bad whether etc, however what separates the winners from losers is the way the think and the actions we take.

Yes there are unique and mitigating circumstances that will set anyone back, such as accidents, injuries, sickness, and other rare forms of disaster, however most of the time it’s the stories we tell ourselves and the LACK of action that we take that will prevent us from accomplishing what we want to get out of life.

I was following up with some leads the other day, and saw my team was trying to onboard a person that opted in to one of our trial offers.

After several cancelled appointments, we received a message that said, “I need to put this off as it isn’t a convenient time for me to start a fitness program.” WELL, I NEARLY LOST MY MIND WHEN I HEARD THIS!!

How can someone put off taking care of their health and fitness because it’s not “convenient” for them?

This person is going to suffer longer because they are not willing make a commitment to taking care of themselves and doing something that will net them positive results and greatly improve their quality of life.

Normally I don’t let other people’s excuses bother me too much, however this one struck a nerve.

What does convenient really mean?

I looked it up and found the following definition:

adjective

fitting in well with a person's needs, activities, and plans.

involving little trouble or effort.

situated so as to allow easy access to.

In other words, things need to be perfectly in alignment with your current schedule, and it needs to be easy.

Now I ask, how many things in life that we NEED to be doing fall into this category?

Is it convenient getting up early for work every day?

Is it convenient making dinner for the family, then cleaning up after?

Is it convenient going to school for an education?

The answer is NO, and in order to make any kind of improvements in our lives, we need to apply self-sacrifice, and MAKE the time to do what’s necessary.

News flash, being healthy and earning a decent living will never be easy and convenient.

There is no quick fix for either. It takes a lot of time, energy and effort to accomplish anything in life.

If it were easy, everyone would be a millionaire with six pack abs.

Success is reserved for the few. It’s the ones that program their minds to succeed, and don’t let any trivial bullshit derail them from accomplishing their mission.

It’s easy to stay in bed, or go home and watch tv and not workout.

It’s easy to hit the drive thru and not prep healthy meals.

It’s easy to slack at work, cut corners, and leave early.

But where does this get us?

Nowhere desirable unless you are ok with being less than average and willing to struggle through life.

Like I said in the beginning of this article, it’s you vs you and the stories you tell yourself that create your identity and the success you achieve.

I am not a workout person, I have no time for the gym, I am not good at sales, I can’t seem to find a decent job are all versions of a victim mentality, and until you change the dialogue, you will stay stuck in the rut you are in.

Think ahead and ask yourself: How convenient is it going to be when my joints start hurting due to the extra weight I am carrying? or How convenient is it going to be for other people that will need to take care of you or when you get sick? (Actually, when you think about it, it’s a bit selfish to NOT improve your health, because others that love you will end up suffering the consequences)

How convenient will life be then? Probably not very!!

So what’s the solution?

It’s simple but not easy. It requires a desire to win, discipline to follow a strategic plan, and commitment to grow and be better. If you don’t instill those character traits, it will never happen.

Good things are only going to happen when you are willing to step out of your comfort zone, be willing to make self-sacrifices, and embrace some pain and discomfort.

Until then, be prepared to stay stagnant in life and don’t expect anything to change anytime soon.

I heard a great quote this weekend that went like this:

“Life is tough, and in order to achieve what we want, we need to be willing to stand in the rain a little longer.”

Let’s do this,

Coach Matt
