Brown University has lost arguably its biggest academic — and media — star to another Ivy League school.

On Tuesday, Yale announced that Dr. Megan Ranney, “an internationally recognized public health leader, investigator, advocate, and clinician-scientist, will become dean of the Yale School of Public Health (YSPH) on July 1.”

During the pandemic, Ranney was one of the most prominent faces in public health, in terms of the response to coronavirus.

As such, GoLocal recognized Ranney as its 2020 Woman of the Year for Rhode Island

As GoLocal wrote:

The emergency room physician is also a leading expert on gun violence.  She has been a regular on CNN on the coronavirus, but she also released a major CDC funded study on gun violence.

Ranney told the AMA in an interview about the link between gun violence and gun suicide, “I would describe them as deeply interlinked. The drivers of firearm suicide are so similar to the drivers of firearm homicide and firearm domestic violence. If we can reduce one, we are likely to reduce them all."

Did we mention Ranney is also emerging as a top entrepreneur in digital health?

And oh, did we mention she's a working mom and Good Morning America recognized her as a hero for her emergency room work?

Music superstar Katy Perry, via remote video, surprised Ranney and her children on the show.

“I am beyond honored to join Yale as dean of the School of Public Health, and I am looking forward to working with the faculty, students, staff, alumni, and larger New Haven community,” said Ranney at Tuesday’s announcement. “Together, we will both build off YSPH’s extraordinary history and define a transformative vision of what public health education, scholarship, and practice can be in the 21st century.”

“A recipient of numerous awards for her teaching, research, and community service, Professor Ranney is looking forward to drawing on her extensive career experiences to lead the Yale School of Public Health,” Yale President Peter Salovey wrote in a message to the university community. “She will work with colleagues and students to set a bold and inclusive vision for the future of public health.”
