The 20th-ranked Providence College men's basketball team defeated the Georgetown Hoyas (7-23, 2-17 Big East), 88-68, on Sunday at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.

The Friars swept Georgetown this season.

The Friars improved to 21-8 on the season and 13-5 in the conference. The Friars are currently tied with No. 16 Xavier for second place in the Big East standings, behind only No. 10 Marquette.

With Sunday's win, the Friars have won 13 or more conference games for the second consecutive season and second time under Head Coach Ed Cooley. 

"We played well from start to finish," Cooley said. "We were able to score early, which gave us a lot of confidence. This was a must-win game and we played with desperation."

Redshirt senior Ed Croswell led the way for the Friars with a double-double, recording a career-high 25 points, game-high 13 rebounds, and career-high six assists. Graduate student Jared Bynum added 18 points with a season-high six three-pointers. 

 

FIRST HALF:

- The Hoyas scored the first five points of the game. Bynum made back-to-back three-pointers to put the Friars in the scoring column.
- Georgetown led 11-8 at the first media timeout (15:51 mark). Bryce Hopkins (Oak Park, Ill.) hit early foul trouble, with three fouls in the first four minutes of action.
- Bynum opened with a 3-for-3 clip from three-point territory. He scored nine of PC's first 11 points.
- Midway through the first half, Devin Carter (Miami, Fla.) spearheaded a 13-0 surge for the Friars. PC held Georgetown scoreless for over four minutes during the run. PC led 21-11.
- With just over eight minutes until halftime, Clifton Moore (Ambler, Pa.) rejected an inside shot by the Hoyas. On the offensive end, Croswell dished it to Moore for an emphatic slam.
- Croswell was the first player to notch double figures in the game. He had a dominant presence in the paint while the Friars maintained their double-digit lead.
- The Friars held a 14-point advantage, 39-25, with four minutes remaining in the first half.
- Carter and Croswell continued to propel the Friars' offense, leading a 7-0 scoring run to finish the first half. Georgetown missed nine of their last 10 shots of the half and did not score for the final three minutes.

"Croswell's hard work really showed today and Carter set the tone defensively," Cooley said. 

 

SECOND HALF:

- The Hoyas opened the half with four three-pointers, with Jay Heath and Primo Spears nailing two apiece. Georgetown cut the deficit to 10, trailing 49-39. 
With 15 minutes left, Carter stole it away from Georgetown's Bradley Ezewiro in transition. Carter located Bynum on the left wing for Bynum's fourth three-ball. PC led 56-41.

"Our defense set the tone," Cooley said. 

- Bynum and Noah Locke contributed to an 18-3 Friars run with back-to-back triples. By the end of the run, the Friars led 69-42 with 11 minutes left.
- Each team found a rhythm on offense heading into the final minutes. Georgetown made five consecutive shots.

 

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Providence finished 35-69 (50.7%) from the field, 10-19 (52.6%) from three and 8-12 (66.7%) from the free throw line. 
- Georgetown finished 25-63 (39.7%) from the field, 11-28 (39.3%) from three and 7-11 (63.6%) from the free throw line. 
- Four players finished in double figures for the Friars: Croswell (25), Bynum (18), Carter (12) and Locke (12).
- Moore played a season-high 25 minutes for the Friars. He finished with eight points and six boards. 
There was only one lead change in the game. After Georgetown led early, the Friars gained the lead and never surrendered it. 
- The Friars out-rebounded the Hoyas by a margin of 42-35. The Friars also dished 11 more assists, scored 26 more points in the paint and scored 12 more fastbreak points.
- Primo Spears led the way for the Hoyas with a game-high 26 points. Jay Heath tacked on 19 points.
- The Friars dished out a BIG EAST season-best 23 assists on 35 field goals.  
- Providence forced 14 Hoya turnovers and turned those into a 23-12 edge in points off turnovers for the game. 

 

NOTES: 

The Friars are 6-6 in road games this season, including 5-5 in BIG EAST action.
The Friars are ranked No. 20 in the AP Poll and No. 18 in the Coaches Poll. It is the team's seventh week in the polls. 
Providence and Georgetown have met 81 times in school history, with all but two meetings coming since the formation of the BIG EAST Conference in 1979. The Hoyas lead the all-time series, 47-34. 

 

NEXT:

The Friars will head home to take on the No. 16/15 Xavier Musketeers (21-8, 13-5 Big East) on Wednesday, Mar. 1 at 6:30 p.m. at home. The game will be televised on FS1.

Xavier holds a 12-11 all-time edge over the Friars. Earlier this season, the Musketeers defeated the Friars, 85-83, in an overtime thriller on Feb. 1 at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. 

The Friars and Musketeers have the same record and are tied for second place in the conference.
