Art Martone

In February of 2022, Art Martone — one of New England’s most talented sports writers  — died of a rare brain disease.

Now, his peers in sports journalism, along with family and friends, are establishing a college scholarship in his honor.

Martone was a 1973 graduate of Cranston High School West. He wrote for The West Wind, the school’s newspaper and then went to Providence College. He went on to write at the Providence Journal from 1972 to 2009, rising to the sports editor’s post.

His writing earned him accolades and awards, including being named Best Sports Columnist (1998) by Boston Magazine.

He understood the market trends and was instrumental in the development of the Journal’s initial online presence, in addition to hosting one of the first online sports blogs in New England.

Martone then left to become editor of Comcast New England (now NBC Boston Digital Sports) in MA and retired from there in 2019.

Inducted into the Cranston Hall of Fame in 2015, he also served on the board of the Rhode Island Hockey Hall of Fame and was a member of the Baseball Writers Association of America.

A fundraising dinner has been scheduled for April for the scholarship in his honor.
