URI Loses to GW in OT - Sixth Straight Loss

The University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team lost to George Washington University in overtime 89-80 on Wednesday night in Kingston.
The Rams led 7-0 early, and then GW took over.

From there, Rhode Island went on a 14-1 run. Brandon Weston started the late rally with a second-chance basket. Sebastian Thomas knocked down a 3-point shot, and Malik Martin scored on a feed from Thomas to get the deficit down to 69-64 with 4:15 to go.
After the final media timeout, Jalen Carey hit a layup with 3:44 to go to get the Rams within three points. Neither side scored over the next 3:24 until Ishmael Leggett made two free throws to make it a one-point game. After a defensive stop, Leggett came right back and drained a jumper in the paint to put Rhode Island ahead, 70-69 with 53 seconds to go. Thomas made 1-of-2 at the free throw line to make it a two-point lead, but Brendan Adams hit a drive to tie the score with 20 seconds to go. Rhode Island held for the final shot of regulation, but Leggett's 3-point attempt went off the rim.
Weston scored the first overtime points when he took the opening tip in for a layup. From there, George Washington (14-14, 8-7 A-10) went on a 9-1 run that featured seven points from Bishop, the A-10's leading scorer. A pair of Malik Martin free throws stopped the momentum for a moment and got URI within four points, but that was as close as the score got. Rhode Island dropped its sixth straight contest.

- Leggett was 4-of-8 from 3-point range and 8-of-9 at the free throw line.
- George Washington guard James Bishop - the Atlantic 10's leading scorer - led four Colonials in double figures with 25 points.
- Fellow guard Brendan Adams added 22 points, going 9-for-13 from the field.
- Redshirt senior Malik Martin was strong in all areas, scoring 21 points to go with eight rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
- Redshirt junior Jalen Carey had 13 points, five rebounds, and two assists.
- Sophomore guard Sebastian Thomas chipped in with eight points, six assists and four rebounds.
- Redshirt freshman Brandon Weston had six points and six rebounds.
- GW had the edge in points in the paint, 50-38.
- Rhode Island was 14-of-17 at the free throw line.
