WVU Hour of Code Application
Through the CodeWV Initiative, the WVU Center for Excellence in STEM Education, Extension Service, and Physic & Astronomy Department are hosting an “Hour of Code” weekend Nov 30th-Dec 2nd, 2018. We are inviting WV teachers and their students to visit WVU for computer science activities Nov 30 - Dec 2, 2018, and to help host a 3-hour Coding Open House for the general public on Saturday, December 1st.

ELIGIBILITY
Only WV Middle and High School Teachers may apply. Teachers must bring at least 1 student with them in order to be eligible, and commit to host their own Hour of Code event at their school or for their community during the week of December 3rd-9th.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Note that a $500 stipend will be provided for groups of 5 people, $400 for groups of 4 people, and $300 for groups of 3 people. Lodging arrangements will be made for you ahead of time and some meals will be provided, so these stipends are meant to cover travel, additional meals, and incidentals for your group.

Stipends will be distributed directly to you (the lead teacher); note the stipend will come with tax responsibilities. First issue ($400, $300, or $200) will be distributed in late November, i.e. before you arrive at WVU. Second issue of final $100 stipend will be distributed after you have hosted your own Hour of Code at your own school or in your own community

How far are you located from WVU? (i.e. approximate number of miles from Morgantown)
Preference will be given to people traveling from farther distances, as we want to reach teachers and students who don't usually get a chance to come to WVU.
1. Have you participated in a CodeWV Computer Science Professional Development (i.e Computer Science Discoveries (CSD) or Computer Science Principles (CSP) TeacherCon workshop) *
2. Will you be able to attend the full Coding Weekend? i.e. Friday at 7pm through Saturday 11am? *
3. We want this experience to foster joint coding leadership between teacher and student, so please find 1-3 students who are particularly reliable, interested in coding, and who you think would benefit from participating. At the time of this application, you are required to provide the name of at least 1 student. We will give preference to groups with students who are underrepresented in some way (ex: girls, students of color, potential first generation college go-ers), so please include an explanation of why this student would particularly benefit from this opportunity. Please have the student's parent or guardian sign a permission form, and email a copy of the form to codewv@mail.wvu.edu by the deadline of this application, i.e. September 21st. *
4. If accepted, you may recruit up to 3 students total to join you as well as another teacher, parent or community member chaperone: "I understand that as the lead teacher for my group I am responsible for obtaining appropriate school permissions and assuring student safety and well-being. *
5. This opportunity is designed to target schools and communities who are most in need, i.e. those who have very few resources or cannot easily work with computer scientists or visit WVU. Please describe why you and your students are most in need of participating in WVU’s Hour of Code Weekend. *
6. What percentage of students are on free and reduced lunch at your school? *
7. After participating in WVU’s Hour of Code event, you will be expected to host your own “Hour of Code” event at your school or in your community sometime before December 9th and to report back on that event by December 14th. Do you certify that you will plan such an event and report back by these dates? *
8. Please describe your vision for your Hour of Code event, including date, time, location, audience, and preparation plans.   *
It’s okay if this vision evolves over the course of the semester, we just want to know your basic plan for now.
9. Anything else you'd like to say as we consider your application? *
