Dear Parent/Guardian:
We would like to invite your student to join the Tara High School Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) Trojan Strong Battalion. In this introduction, we want to share with you some key information about the Tara JROTC Program. This is a brief summary of what we are about and to inform you of various programs and opportunities available to your student.
As we are frequently asked, “What is taught in JROTC and what do students do in JROTC?”, our response is that our mission in JROTC is, “TO MOTIVATE YOUNG PEOPLE TO BE BETTER CITIZENS.” We are a leadership development and a character-building program. We are not recruiters for the U.S. military, nor do we have any obligations or quotas to meet in terms of getting students to join the U.S. military. However, if a student should choose to join the military upon completion of three years of JROTC, it will afford them receive an advanced rank and will enhance their opportunities to qualify for 3 and 4 year college scholarships offered at LSU, Southern, ULL, Northwestern State Univ, Grambling, LA Tech, UL-Monroe and many out of state colleges.
Our curriculum covers a wide variety of subjects including leader development, physpical fitness, financial management, and CPR\first aid and career exploration. The program is structured to resemble a military organization in order to provide a setting to teach and apply various leadership principles and to instill self-discipline and a sense of direction.
Successful completion of each JROTC course I and II will earn Carnegie credits that students can use as a substitute for Physical Education (PE), Health and other elective credits. Additional information and program requirements are as follows:
· Participation in integrated-curricular activities such as Drill Team, Color Guard, Rifle Team or Cadet Challenge Team is voluntary and will help enhance their grade in the classroom.
· Cadets will be issued a JROTC uniform free of charge. They are required to wear the uniform once each week and are responsible for keeping it clean. Proper uniform wear is a graded activity and counts for a significant portion of their grade for JROTC.
