Battery Compartment - Starter Battery Install

I’ve heard that sometimes projects go as planned and are easy. Those projects must not be sailboat projects…
After putting it off over the summer, I finally started my starter battery installation, which will include installing a battery monitor. For my install, I’m placing the battery in the port side storage locker.
However, today I was planning to pull my batteries to gain access to the area behind them and ran into 2 problems:
1) The batteries appear to be leaking. I assume this is because they’re old and failing. My battery charger seems to be working as designed, and the batteries are old (mfg 2010). Putting in new batteries was not a part of my plan for this project, but that may be the case.
2) Th compartment for my batteries appears to be glued in? It seems solidly secured, and doesn’t budge. I assumed it would pop out when the batteries were removed.
Can anyone confirm the battery compartment situation. Has anyone had theirs out, or done a mod to get better access to the area outboard of the batteries?
Also, are there any hidden access, like underneath the floor boards?
When installing a new starter battery, has anyone used a parallel relay? I’m planning to run my starter battery to the 1 position of the battery switch, and hook both house batteries in parallel to position 2. I was planning on not using a relay until I started reading about them today.
I was also planning to run a new line from the charger (Charles 30A) to my new 27 series. See any issues with this?

There are channels in the floor pan for cables
I hooked engine battery to engine switch. I combined both house batteries so regardless of where the house battery switch is (1,2, or3) doesn’t matter.
I used a blue sea acr to isolate the house from the engine batteries while allowing the battery with the lower voltage to charge. It also allows manual connection in the event of a dead battery.
System works well. Just replaced engine battery at start of ninth season and house batteries in July.

The pan is epoxied in. I’ve done a mod to get access to the entire area behind the pan and a few owners followed suit. If you search back to some of my posts you should find descriptions with pics.
I used and Echo Charger to feed charging the Starter (I used it as a Reserve by combining the House). There is a chase under the floor boards to the engine where I connected the Alt directly to the House…
