Hello Janet,

First, I am so sorry for your experience. It sounds horrible and very scary; at least, it would be scary to me to have to erase my phone in order to get it back to a functioning state.

Second, I have given your post a great deal of consideration. Let me say that, regardless of what some would lead you to believe, for those of us who are visually impaired, Face ID is far from perfect.

I am assuming that , like many of us, you cannot see the contents of the phone display when it is held at any distance from your face.

If this is the case, then you are holding the device too close to your face when attempting to setup Face ID.

It may also be the case that the lighting is either too low or not even enough, when setting up Face ID.

Were I you, I would ask a sighted person to assist during the Face ID setup process.

In short, you will have to learn the approximate distance from your face, to hold the phone in order to use Face ID. As many have reported in this community, this can be learned but, make no mistake, it does take time and practice.

Also keep in mind that even sighted users have to enter the device password more than was necessary when Touch ID was in vogue.

So, I suggest that you keep a pair of headphones with you, when in public, just in case you need to enter the device password.

Please know that you have our support and try not to be too hard on yourself. Learning to use Face ID takes time.

Let us know how it goes, okay?

Mark

Subject: Face ID and iOS 16.2 Help Please.. ease/

Hi Everyone.
I finally upgraded to iOS 16.2 from iOS 15.7 on my XR phone, and I had to erase the entire phone in order to get back my phone calls in the recent folder of the Phone App. All that so far is fine. Another problem I am now having is I can’t set up Face ID. When I try to set it up, I keep getting a message saying my face is not in the frame, then I get a message saying Face ID can’t detect any sun glasses put on sun glasses and try again, but I’m not wearing glasses. Sometimes I get the message saying move my head to the right, and then move my head to the left, move my head up. I then get a message saying 30 percent. 65 percent move head up, I move my head and it says Face ID not available try again later. I checked in the detention feature and it is off. Can someone please tell me is there a new way of setting up Face ID in iOS 16.2? I feel this is a real security threat not being able to use Face ID. When I am around people, when I am in the store, when I am in the doctor’s office, I have to enter in my passcode using Voiceover, in which means everyone can hear my passcode.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Janet

Hi Mark,
Thank you for your understanding. I am just so tired of this so called accessible technology! I've spent two days working on this phone, just because I updated. I've read online if one has a hard time with Face ID after updating, just tap on the Face ID reset button, but I don't have the Face ID button. So now, I will have to spend more time on the phone with the Apple Support tomorrow again!
Janet .

Janet,

I'm curious: Are you saying that Face ID worked on your X R before you updated to iOS 16.2?

If so, then you already know how to use Face ID and my previous comments were in error.

Please let me know.

I eagerly await your reply,

Mark

Mark,
Yes, Face ID was fine since I had my RX phone in which I bought in Nov of 2018, and I have reset Face ID a few times. The only problem I ever had with this Face ID is it would never work for the App Store or iTunes. Apple could never figure that one out though. So yes, I am familiar with Face ID, until I updated to 16.2.

Wow, Janet.

Now that is extremely interesting and perplexing.

Please keep us posted.

The X R is a fine device. I simply cannot imagine what has gone wrong; it is certainly not you.

I wonder if Apple will suggest that you set the X R up as a new device and install each app, separately. Even the thought of such a scenario leaves me feeling depressed.

Again, keep us posted.

You make an excellent point, as always, Sieghard.

I find that, where I run into trouble, is that I tend to want to look at the display and, as such, tend to hold the device, slightly too close to my eyes, when unlocking the phone. With Touch ID, this was never an issue.

Old habits are so difficult to break.

Mark, how often one has to enter your Pin I think is highly subjective. I know people who do a lot of manual labour and who said Touch Id never worked for them or at least not to the point where they even bothered with it because their fingers were always too dirty or scratched up for it. They don't have this issue with Face Id.
For myself Face Id works better and more reliably than Touch Id as well and I often go days without having to enter my Pin.

Hi Jannet,

Under settings, you'll find face id and passcode
Which is where you can go to setup your face ID<

I realise you're having troubles,
But if you listen to the voiceover voice and be patient,
It's simple enough to do.
I suggest sitting in a chair back straight with your phone about a foot in front of your face,

You can go up to about a foot and a half away.

Mark and Jannet,

This brings up something of interest,

Jannet,
How did you set up your new phone?
Manually or by using the quick setup at the start of setting up your new phone?

It has been a few months but I'm sure you can get the face id setup from the old phone to come across to the new one.

However I could well be wrong on that one.

I'm just wondering why it is that I’m getting all your messages to the vi phone users 2 list,
I'm sure I'm suvbscribed to the original list,
But I get none of the related posts.

I feel for you, Janet, and it sounds like the problem is with 16.2. It could be that I am prejudiced, because I have heard so much negative about 16.2.
