• DOE solicitations are typically posted on Grants.gov as well as on the agency-specific funding opportunity websites listed above.  If pursuing a DOE funding opportunity, it is wise to subscribe to receive email updates for that opportunity, as it is not unusual for one or more amendments to be posted between the original release date and the due date.

Acquisition Forecast - It is the policy of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to provide timely information to the public regarding DOE’s forecast of future prime contracting opportunities and subcontracting opportunities which are available via the Department’s major site and facilities management contractors. Specific Funding Mechanisms:

Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC) program - established in 2009 by the Office of Basic Energy Sciences to fund integrated, multi-investigator Centers focusing on energy-related "grand challenges" and use-inspired basic research needs.  As of 2020, a total of 41 EFRCs in 34 states have been funded.

  • The Office of Science is further divided into several programs: ASCR, BES, BER, FES, HEP, NP, SBIR/STTR

• Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR)
  • ASCR supports research in applied mathematics, computer science, high-performance networks, computational partnerships (SciDAC) and educational programs.

• Basic Energy Sciences (BES)
  • BES supports a variety of research disciplines that seek to discover new materials and design new chemical processes.  BES also supports the Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC) program.

• Biological and Environmental Research (BER)
  • BER supports research on atmospheric processes; terrestrial ecosystem processes; subsurface biogeochemical processes involved in nutrient cycling, radionuclide fate and transport, and water cycling; climate change and environmental modeling; and analysis of impacts and interdependencies of climatic change with energy production and use.

• Fusion Energy Sciences (FES)
  • FES supports research in plasma physics with the goal of building the scientific foundation needed to develop a fusion energy source.

• High Energy Physics (HEP)
  • HEP supports theoretical and experimental research in both elementary particle physics and fundamental accelerator science and technology.

• Nuclear Physics (NP)
  • NP supports research on heavy ion physics, medium energy nuclear physics, low energy nuclear physics, theoretical nuclear physics, accelerator physics, and isotope production.

Applied Research

• Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E)
  • ARPA-E supports high-potential, high-impact energy technologies that are too early for private-sector investment that have the potential to radically improve US economic prosperity, national security, and environmental well being.

• Office of Electricity Delivery & Energy Reliability (OE)
  • OE supports research on improving energy storage and delivery systems, as well as on cybersecurity  as it relates to the nation's electronic grid.  OE does not have a separate funding opportunities website, but any OE funding announcements would be posted on grants.gov.
     
• Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy (EERE)
  • EERE invests solutions for energy-saving homes, buildings, and manufacturing, sustainable transportation, and renewable electricity generation.  For example, EERE funds research on  energy efficiency in buildings, development of solar, wind, water, and geothermal energy technologies, fuel cells, bioenergy, and advanced vehicle technologies.

• Office of Fossil Energy (FE)
  • FE supports research fossil energy research, such as clean coal technologies (carbon capture and storage) and methane production.  FE's funding opportunities are managed by the NETL.

• Office of Nuclear Energy (NE)
  • NE supports nuclear energy research and development, including improving the reliability, safety, longevity, and affordability of nuclear reactors, developing sustainable nuclear fuel cycles, and minimizing the risks of nuclear proliferation and terrorism.

• National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL)
  • The NETL is a national laboratory owned and operated by DOE.  In addition to its own in-house research, which focuses largely on coal, natural gas, and oil technologies, NETL issues collaborative funding opportunities to partner with outside organizations, including universities.   NETL also commonly announces and manages funding opportunities on behalf of other DOE agencies, such as the Office of Fossil Energy (FE) and Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability (OE).  NETL also serves as DOE's focal point for all unsolicited proposals.

Finding Past Awards:

• DOE Office of Science maintains a searchable and interactive map of awarded grants as well as lists of all awards .
• ARPA-E provides descriptions of all past and current funded projects on its website. Past awards for the other applied research offices are not readily discoverable.
• A searchable database of funding totals for DOE is available at USAspending.gov
