Technical Specialist (Electron Microscopy)
Description
Plymouth Electron Microscopy Centre (PEMC) has a vacancy for a full time technical specialist in the field of life or health sciences. PEMC is a core facility within the University of Plymouth, supporting teaching, research and industrial collaborations. We have a range of electron microscopes (SEM, TEM & FIB-SEM) equipped with an array of analytical
techniques (EDS, WDS, EBSD, STEM & CL), as well as dedicated sample preparation equipment for both life and physical sciences, and engineering.
This post sits within an interdisciplinary team of dedicated electron microscopists whom support teaching, research and development within the Faculty of Science & Engineering, as well as with the Peninsula Medical & Dental schools, and our partner colleges. Our technical specialists perform essential roles supporting and enabling both students and staff in one-to-one and whole group settings, maintaining and developing a range of electron microscopes and sample preparation equipment, and working with industrial or commercial partners. Working closely with colleagues, our technical specialists share their knowledge with others, helping them to develop their ideas and fulfilling their academic potential.
This post focuses on supporting our colleagues and partners in the field or either life or health sciences. You will therefore have a first degree in a related scientific discipline, and demonstrable practical experience of electron microscopy preferably within an academic or clinical environment. You will also have a clear drive to develop new or novel microscopy techniques within our developing facility, and a desire to work alongside colleagues to develop a research profile within your field.
This is a full-time position working 37 hours per week on a permanent basis.
For informal enquiries, please contact Dr Natasha Stephen (Director, Plymouth Materials Characterisation Project, Plymouth Electron Microscopy Centre) via email: natasha.stephen@plymouth.ac.uk
The University of Plymouth is committed to equality of opportunity, promoting a diverse and inclusive culture, demonstrated through our commitment to the gender equality Athena SWAN Charter and as a Stonewall diversity champion. All applications will be judged solely on merit, however, we particularly welcome applications from groups currently under-represented in the workforce, for example black and minority ethnic groups.
University of Plymouth holds a TEF (Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework) Silver by the Office for Students.
University of Plymouth has been recognised by Bloomberg as one of the 50 best UK employers for 2016.
