VIRTUAL VISIT DAYS (UW)

A series of events on Zoom, with live Q&A with faculty, advisors, and current students. Open to prospective undergraduate students of any age and their families, teachers, counselors, and advisors. Learn about UW’s top-ranked undergraduate programs from the faculty leading the charge, hear from academic advisors that support our students along their way, and ask current students why they chose UW Environment and how they’re involved in creative problem-solving.

Environmental Studies
Sean McDonald and Kristi Straus will introduce you to this highly interdisciplinary major, one of our sustainability classes, and the year-long capstone internship completed by each student in this major. Eli Wheat will take you on a virtual tour of the UW Farm, located right on the UW Seattle campus, where he researches sustainable farming practices alongside current students.

Marine Sciences
Intrigued by the watery world? Join us to learn about marine plastics pollution from Randie Bundy and watch her demonstrate why density matters. Jackie Padilla-Gamiño will show you the lab kits she sent to students’ homes during the pandemic so they could conduct their own experiments on the growth of sea anemones in different conditions. This is a great chance to meet faculty & ask advisors your questions about our #1 ranked Oceanography program, our newest major in Marine Biology as well as our Fisheries major.

Engineering
Meet faculty and advisors that will answer all your questions about the only engineering degree at UW outside of the College of Engineering. Take a virtual tour of the paper lab with Anthony DiChiara to see how sustainable and renewable products are made. Heidi Gough will take you on a virtual tour of her on-campus research station studying how poplar trees can clean industrial waste from soil and then be turned into biofuel- no fossils required!

Ecology & Conservation
Interested in saving forests and wildlife? How about marine ecosystems and food webs that humans rely on? Join us to meet Monika Moskal and learn about how she’s using lasers to measure forest vegetation. Chelsea Wood will introduce you to parasites, a key part of marine food webs, and offer tips on how to enjoy sushi without getting sick. Academic advisors will be there to answer all your questions about our ecology and conservation-focused undergrad programs.

Earth Sciences
If rocks, geology, weather and climate change are your jam you won’t want to miss this session. You’ll meet Juliet Crider who will show you that Deception Pass’s geology is unexpected upside down. Shades of Purple is a one-day student conference for American Indian/Alaska Native and underrepresented minority high school seniors (Class of 2022) in Washington who are interested in attending the University of Washington in Seattle. This includes the following underrepresented minority groups: Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (Melanesian, Micronesian, Polynesian, etc.), and Southeast Asian (Vietnamese, Lao, Khmer, Hmong, Mien, Burmese, etc.).
