Hi there crafty friends!! I’m so pleased you’re joining us today as we celebrate Altenew’s newest Craft-A-Flower release – the Magnolia! This is a large bloom that makes layering the die cuts a breeze, perfect for the beginner new to layering dies. If you weren’t sent my way by Yasmin Diaz then you can always start over at the top of the hop on the Altenew Card Blog.

For my project today, I decided to return to my darker, more dramatic cards. I really wanted to use a black background, and I picked out cardstock scraps from my scrap drawer to die cut the flower itself.

I started by dry embossing a A2 panel of Jet Black cardstock, using the Frilly Peonies 3D embossing folder. This has large blooms and leaves that fill out right up to the edges. I knew most of it would be covered up by the Magnolia, with the exception of the edges. I also wanted an embossing folder with blooms of a similar size to my die cuts.

I die cut a selection of cardstocks in pastel peaches, corals, deep burgundy and layered them together to create two Magnolias. I used yellow and orange scraps for the centres. For my leaves, I used shades of navy, and sky blues – I love how these two colors go together!

I arranged the die cuts onto the centre of my black dry embossed panel, overlaying one on top of the other with a single and double layer of Instant Dimension foam tape, and slotted the leaves behind, securing with liquid glue.

I decided to add a few splatters using Pure White Ink Spray, and I also mixed up some white acrylic paint with water for a brighter white splatter as well. When dry, I added a few Satin White Sequins and a touch of Crystal Glaze (Nuvo) onto the flower centres. I finished with a sweet sentiment stamped in Obsidian Pigment Ink to finish.

  1. Beautiful card Jenni. what a clever technique to use similar floral designs on you dry embossed background to continue with you composition without subtracting attention from the pretty Magnolias! Thanks for the inspiration! Have a wonderful day!

  2. I absolutely LOVE the black background. It really accents the amazing flowers you’ve used and also love the non-traditional coloured leaves. Great card!! 😀💕

  3. This is a favorite for me (in this blog hop). I LOVE how you’ve “frosted” the card; especially against the black. This is stunning!
