Moderated windows 10 update 21h1

Hi All,

This is regarding the latest windows 10 update, 21h1.

Have you noticed that your alt+tabbing has become weird? I have noticed now that when I alt tab around, I often land on something that is fully quiet and Jaws doesn’t read anything.  I either have to keep hitting alt+tab, or something else like windows key to get out of it.  Also, the title bars of my windows aren’t reading correctly everytime.

If anyone has any tips on this new windows 10 experience with alt+tab please let me know

Best,

Juan

I had this same issue today, I’m also having issues with my braille display but I won’t get into that since that would be off-topic. I’m just glad I have 2 other screen readers that I can turn on when I have issues with Jaws. Hopefully someone has a solution, or better yet this will be fixed in the next Jaws update whenever that gets released.

Thanks for the posts on this subject. I got a new laptop last week. After everything was updated I started having these same issues. I thought there was something on the new laptop I needed to change, or my old brain was going nuts. I haven’t any clue as to what has caused the problem, but at least I now know I’m not alone or going nuts. And I’ve still got my old laptop for when things get too crazy.

I have no idea what version of Windows 10 you may have had before, or if you tweaked this setting, but, in any case, you need to check:

Settings, System, Multitasking Pane and check to see what the dropdown for Pressing ALT + Tab shows, is set to.  If you want conventional "old Windows" movement between open windows then you need to select, Open windows only, from the dropdown.

I have had windows 21h1 build 19043.1081 for a while now on a new hp laptop and have not had the problem you speak of, but have lost eloquence and have to use sapi5 x64 factory to have speech.

Hi Juan/all,

All I can say is that alt-tab will either not move me at all to another window, or simply not keep more than two, if it even does so. But I still get on ok. Nothing to suggest.

When I encounter this problem I sometimes find that pressing shift alt tab to work backwards through the task list works for me.

Thanks to whomever it was that mentioned the settings for alt-tab in Windows 10!

Mine was set to show the last 5 windows opened in Edge.  I’m not sure who the heck thought that was a good idea, but I set it to Open Windows Only, and set it to show only the windows in the desktop I’m using.

It is operating much more smoothly now.

I can have multiple windows open and alt-tab to whichever one I want and nothing weird so far is happening; other than it working 😊.

That would be me, and you're welcome.

I knew that when Microsoft introduced this particular behavior change, and made it default, it was going to be a major stumbling block for screen reader users.  There was much discussion about it on the Windows Access with Screen Readers group (formerly Win10 for Screen Reader Users) back when it first hit, and I cannot recall whether that was version 1909 or 2004.

This is one of the problems for those who end up on the "late end" of any feature update roll out cycle.  Most of the bumps get discussed in the early weeks and first several months and then the discussions fade.  By the time the late cohorts are updated much can be forgotten.  This is one reason I implore people to file specific messages about changes that they are virtually certain will affect them, eventually, even if they don't at the moment.  It makes it much quicker and easier to check your own mini-archive.

Hi,

Changes to Alt+Tab behavior cema up in 20H2 with the advent of deeper integration with Chromium Edge.

Cheers,

Thanks Brian.

I thought it might have been you, but I got carried away deleting emails and you know how that goes…
