Tenured/Tenure-Track, Assistant/Associate Professor, Department of Environmental Science

Job no: 498093
Work type: Regular Full-Time
Location: Glassboro, New Jersey
Categories: Faculty – School of Earth and Environment

The School of Earth & Environment at Rowan University seeks to fill one faculty position (Tenured/Tenure-Track) at either the Assistant or Associate Professor level starting September 1st, 2023 in the Department of Environmental Science. We seek outstanding candidates who hold a Ph.D. in Environmental Science or a closely related discipline, such as biology, ecology, chemistry, climate science, geoscience, or marine science. Successful candidates are expected to develop and maintain an active, highly visible, extramurally funded research program with outstanding scholarship and demonstrate excellence in teaching and mentoring both graduate and undergraduate students.

We seek candidates focused on asking big picture, global questions. International collaborations and international field sites are desirable.  The successful candidate will 1) engage in the scientific study of rapid, worldwide environmental change, in its many aspects, 2) eagerly involve students in research, and 3) be a passionate advocate and effective communicator on environmental issues.

We seek a scholar at the forefront of advancing our understanding of the biodiversity crisis. We are particularly interested in highly interdisciplinary scholars who research biodiversity loss with respect to environmental controls or ecosystem services. We seek researchers approaching the problem from one of many disciplines, including climate impacts and resiliencyecosystem health (e.g., water, soil, or air quality), biodiversity informaticsimpacts of emerging pollutants (particularly on freshwater or terrestrial ecosystems), environmental genomics (including but not limited to environmental DNA assessments of biodiversity) and soil microbiomes, using any of the many tools available, such as modeling or multiomics approaches to measure responses to environmental change.

Our department is rapidly expanding and committed to pushing back on the climate and biodiversity crises. The new hire will play a vital role in development and growth of new graduate programs. As such, we seek an innovative scientist who will build a cutting edge research program that synergizes with other environmental science faculty. The successful candidate will teach courses that support the undergraduate environmental science curriculum (this may include courses on data analytics, soils, biogeochemistry), or the developing graduate curriculum, depending on the interests and expertise of the candidate. South Jersey offers exceptional ecosystem diversity within a short drive of campus allowing for a strong experiential- based instruction.

Scholars hired in the School of Earth & Environment will have superior communication skills and will have demonstrated a deep commitment to sharing their science with the public. As part of teaching and outreach, SEE faculty are encouraged to develop community science and teaching experiences in the nearby Edelman Fossil Park and affiliated Scotland Run Park. We are seeking dedicated agents of change, and a willingness to work with governments, NGOs, and industry to solve real-world problems is desired.

The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. by Sept. 1, 2023 and will have demonstrated early success at research and publication. Postdoctoral experience is a plus. Those seeking to be hired at the level of Associate Professor should have accomplishments that meet or exceed expectations for tenure, and a record of publication and grantsmanship reflecting a seasoned, internationally visible program in the environmental sciences.  A commitment to excellence in teaching and to communicating science to the public is a necessity. Rowan Environmental Science is committed to broadening inclusion in the sciences and seeks candidates from diverse backgrounds. Around 30% of students at Rowan University are first- generation college students, and ~25% of Rowan Environmental Science students are non-white. The successful applicant will be expected to add to the welcoming and supportive community we are building.
