SEAWA is governed by a board of directors with representations from agriculture, industry, water licensees, all three levels of government, environmental NGO, outdoor recreation & tourism, indigenous, academic institutions, and the public. SEAWA is one of the 11 WPACs in Alberta that are in partnership with the provincial government to help achieve the goals of Water for Life â€“ Alberta’s Strategy for Sustainability. Job Description

The Stewardship and Communication Coordinator works with SEAWA staff, contractors, and volunteers on SEAWA’s projects, applied research, and communication, education and outreach activities.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the Executive Director perform the following tasks:

  • You are the field team lead for field projects and applied research.
  • Work with the Executive Director and prepare weekly work plans for field projects and applied research. You work with summer students, volunteers, and contractors and implement work plans.
  • Perform field work tasks for the maintenance of riparian restoration educational sites and applied research experiments, and ensure supplies and equipment are organized in storage and ready for use.
  • Lead in the implementation and data collection of applied research projects, and citizen science data collection as they arise.
  • Prepare basic maps of location of project sites, experimental plots, sampling points, transects, and other spatial features.
  • Ensure field safety practices and respectful behaviour are followed as provided in SEAWA Health and Safety Manual, and Respectful Workplace Policy
  • Ensure that documentation of all field work, applied research, and educational activities are entered into SEAWA’s filing system (photos, data, expenses, GPS locations, maps, written articles, etc.).
  • Organize the holding of SEAWA events: educational forums, open houses, and tours.
  • Organize and set-up SEAWA’s participation at community events.
  • Write and post contents on the SEAWA website. Work with the web developer to correct website issues.
  • Write articles about SEAWA activities or any relevant topic for the SEAWA newsletter.
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director and experts on the SEAWA board and committees, educational institutions, and individuals, prepare SEAWA educational materials such as info- or factsheets, posters, booklets, articles, and social media postings.
  • Assist in the holding of committee meetings and take notes.
  • Work with the Executive Directors to identify new projects and develop partnerships.
  • Administrative and office tasks, and any other task assigned by the Executive Director.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree in any natural science field of study – environmental science, ecosystem management, biology, agriculture
  • At least three years of relevant work experience.
  • Ability to do manual field work and some lifting work.
  • Basic understanding of plant growth requirements in a semi-arid climate such as Southeastern Alberta.
  • Proficiency in the use of MS Suite – Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and a publication software.
  • Basic GIS skills.
  • Ability to learn website editing and posting.
  • Excellent English communication skills – spoken and written.
  • Collaborative and cooperative attitude, respectful, positive and cheerful disposition, and interested in listening to people, having discussion and sharing of relevant knowledge.
  • A strong work ethic: punctual, respectful, follows schedules, follows instructions (work plans and safety practices), meets deadlines and deliverables, and well-organized.
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license and access to a vehicle to travel to work sites.
  • Able to work alone and as part of a team, and
  • Ability to work in a small urban centre such as Medicine Hat.

Position Details

  • This position is initially for 6 months, starting May 1, 2023, with a possibility of becoming a permanent position depending on performance and availability of funds.
  • Preference is given to candidates 30 years old or younger, to qualify for youth wage subsidy programs.
  • Pay range is prorated based on the annual pay of $55,000 to $58,000. Work hours are 7.5 hours per day, 5 days a week.
  • During the field season, work is 90% field work and 10% office work. Work for the fall-winter is approximately 10% field work and 90% office work.
  • The position is at Medicine Hat, AB. There is no virtual work.
  • This position reports to the Executive Director.
  • A Police Check and a valid AB driver’s license are required, and
  • Legally allowed to work in Canada.
