Exciting role at the heart of the clean energy transition and net zero ambitions. The International Hydropower Association (IHA) is recruiting a part-time G-res Technical Support Manager.
The successful candidate will be knowledgeable and passionate about renewable energy and the clean energy transition, and able to work independently in a technical role.
IHA is an evidence-based, global advocacy organisation whose mission is to deliver renewable energy systems, freshwater management and climate change solutions by advancing sustainable hydropower. It is the global voice for sustainable hydropower, representing more than 100 organisations including developers, operators and manufacturers. It works with industry, governments, civil society, multilateral institutions and the financial community. Its Board comprises influential industry representatives, a former head of government and a leading former United Nations diplomat.
The G-res Tool is a simple-to-use, web-based tool which was designed to help hydropower companies and researchers conveniently estimate and report net greenhouse gas emissions from their reservoirs online. It was developed through a multi-stakeholder research project led by the International Hydropower Association and the UNESCO Chair in Global Environmental Change. It has been recognised by several international institutions (e.g. EU Taxonomy, Climate Bonds Initiative) as being an accurate way of evaluating reservoir emissions on its lifecycle. - Remuneration: Up to £42,000/year pro-rata (subject to experience)
- Contract: Part time, permanent contract, 15hrs/ 2 days per week
- Location: Remote working, though ability to have regular calls with Montreal (Eastern Standard timezone) is required
Key responsibilities
The technical aspects of the G-res Tool are currently managed by the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). The main work of the successful candidate will be to provide support to the UQAM team and participate and eventually share responsibility for the following specific tasks. Training on the G-res Tool will be provided on the job.
- Validating results submitted by certified users
- Preparing assessments of GHG emissions from reservoirs
- Testing and updating the G-res Tool and the associated Google Earth Engine functionality
- Providing G-res training
- Providing content for newsletters
- Database research and development
- Special projects related to G-res
Essential skills and experiences
- GIS skills (ArcGIS, QGIS and GEE)
- Experienced in programming (good at learning new coding languages)
- Willingness to work in an international environment and across timezones
- Good written and communication skills
- High attention to detail and work with accuracy
- Ability to work independently
- Education level: Masters or PhD degree
- Fluency in English
Desired skills and experience
- Knowledge about GHG emissions from aquatic systems
- Knowledge about hydropower
- Strong mathematical skills, ability to understand complex equations
- Proficiency in a second language (particularly French, Spanish or Chinese) desirable
