Aquatic Research
(Full time, permanent position)

UINR is a non-profit resource management organization that works on behalf of Cape Breton’s five Mi’kmaw communities toward a sustainable Unama’ki. This position is funded through the Aboriginal Aquatic Resource and Ocean Management program (AAROM). This program is a Fisheries and Oceans program that supports AAROM departments such as UINR to build and maintain scientific and technical capacity in fisheries, aquatic resources, and oceans management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pursue UINR’s goals in the context of research and stewardship of aquatic species at risk, habitat restoration and wetlands
  • Participate in key governance processes related to aquatic species at risk, habitat restoration and wetlands
  • Engage Mi’kmaw fishers, elders and knowledge holders to gather perspectives community concerns and research needs
  • Provide technical and Mi’kmaw knowledge to leadership when required
  • Conduct, coordinate, and/or partner to have research needs addressed
  • Supervise employees

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field; Master’s level preferred
  • Demonstrated expertise in project management, including proposal writing, budget preparation, and preparation of reports
  • Independent with expertise to lead and collaborate within UINR and externally
  • Understanding of Mi’kmaw culture, including traditions, practices, and language
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
  • Ecological understanding of aquatic species and habitats in the estuarine, freshwater, and marine environments
  • Understanding Two-Eyed Seeing
  • Expertise in the use of MS Office
  • Critical thinker with innovative ideas and skills to further the goals of UINR
  • Ability to participate in often challenging field work and conditions, and during inclement weather

Salary: Starting at $61,060
