Summary: The Executive Director of the R.B. Annis Water Resources Institute (AWRI) will provide vision and leadership for the Institute’s mission, including maintaining and building upon its established reputation for scholarly excellence and community outreach, and demonstrate a commitment to evidence-based teaching and practice.

Essential Functions  

The Executive Director of the R.B. Annis Water Resources Institute (AWRI) will provide vision and leadership for the Institute’s mission, including maintaining and building upon its established reputation for scholarly excellence and community outreach, and demonstrate a commitment to evidence-based teaching and practice. The AWRI Executive Director will: 

  • Develop, execute, and evaluate strategic planning that aligns with the values and goals established for AWRI, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Grand Valley State University.  
  • Report to, and meet with, the CLAS Dean as appropriate. 
  • Promote AWRI at the state, regional, national, and international levels via conference presentations, publications, collaborations, and professional service.  
  • Promote AWRI/CLAS/GVSU by actively engaging with the West Michigan community through service organizations, board service, and other civic activities as appropriate.  
  • Evaluate AWRI faculty and support staff. 
  • Oversee AWRI financial resources and responsibilities. 
  • Work with the Office of Development to build and maintain AWRI’s endowment funds, engage with current donors, and grow the donor base.  
  • Oversee AWRI’s graduate programs, including the Aquatic Emphasis M.S. through the Biology Department and the Water Policy M.S. program. 
  • Mentor research of faculty and graduate students, as appropriate. 
  • Review grant proposals. 
  • Provide assistance in scholarly writing, as appropriate.  
  • Maintain an active personal research program, publish scholarly works, and secure external funding, as appropriate. 
  • Teach in related area of expertise, as appropriate.

Required Education  

  • Doctorate in an aquatic science, environmental science, or related discipline.  

Required Experience  

  • A highly collaborative and transparent leadership style. 
  • A strong track record of scholarly achievement within a complex environment, including successful grant writing, externally funded research, and peer-reviewed publications.  
  • Administrative, personnel, and financial management experience.  
  • A history of visionary, results-oriented leadership. 
  • A record of community-engaged research and/or public education and outreach activities.  
  • Strong interpersonal and diplomatic skills. 
  • A record of mentoring early career faculty and graduate students. 
  • A record of implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion best practices.

Preferred Experience 

  • Experience with philanthropy.
