Auckland Council’s Plans and Places Department was created to lead and champion statutory planning for Auckland. We spearhead region-wide Resource Management Act planning projects such as the NPS-UD and NPS-FM plan changes as well as keeping the Auckland Unitary Plan (AUP) up to date with Council and private plan changes.

He angitūtanga: The opportunity

We have a rare and exciting opportunity for a well-seasoned Lead Planner Freshwater Management to take their regional resource management planning expertise to the next level in this engaging and varied position. The size and scope of this role is exceptional as you will be looked upon to drive region-wide freshwater management policy development as part of implementing the requirements of the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management. You will primarily develop a plan change to the AUP that Auckland Council is working towards notifying before the end of 2024. You will provide senior technical oversight of planning projects and high-quality mentoring and coaching of other planners. This is a 3-year fixed-term position.

You will need to partner with iwi and a range of internal and external stakeholders to provide sound policy advice, facilitate and lead interactions with the NPS-FM Steering Committee and Political Working Group. With a strong focus on continuous improvement, you’ll be working within one of the world’s most unique planning authorities and helping us to ensure development within Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland provides the best possible outcomes for our environment and our communities.

 He kōrero mōu: About you

This is a challenging and substantial piece of work, and we’ll be looking for individuals with the right experience and qualifications to match it. With a passion for policy and strategic planning, you’ll need a minimum of a degree qualification and at least ten years of experience in one of the following disciplines: environmental science, planning policy, strategic planning, and resource management.  Expertise in the freshwater planning space and a robust understanding of the Resource Management Act is highly advantageous.

Prior experience managing complex projects or plan changes, particularly about the natural environment or resource use, will also be highly regarded. You will ideally excel in presenting to a diverse audience, be analytical, and be able to confidently develop and lead the financial management of planning projects. As this role might require you to travel around the region using council vehicles, you’ll ideally hold a valid New Zealand driver’s license.
