Policy and Advocacy Consultant

World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)

Africa

Location: Flexible in one of WWF Country Offices in AfricaThe World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)

International through its Africa Office is seeking to hire a consultant to support its policy and advocacy work in Africa.

Context:

The WWF Africa Conservation Framework covering the period 2020 – 2025 seeks to move beyond business as usual and provide an opportunity to strengthen co-existence between people and nature. With its two core impact areas and six impact pathways including influential policy advocacy and transformative partnerships, WWF is looking at not only strengthening its policy and advocacy work, it is looking at building effective partnerships to deliver conservation impact at scale. This will include activating its Policy Cabinet, a sort of platform which is to provide strategic direction for policy agenda setting that will purposefully, constructively and proactively leverage policy making processes to promote social and environmental sustainability in Africa.  In the last few years we have seen the increasing interest of stakeholders in both global and national policy issues – the SDGs, the adoption of the new global biodiversity framework, the climate change discussions with the need to focus more on issues such as adaptation, nature based solutions, loss and damage and finance and the process for the development of a new global treaty to end plastic pollution.

A great effort is needed to focus on collective and integrated delivery and implementation of multiple global and regional policies. Africa is critical actor in all these processes and WWF has been a key stakeholder in these different processes. Unfortunately, WWF Africa country offices’ participation remains limited and this, in most cases, is due to inadequate human and financial resources. There is no doubt that from 2023, policy issues especially related to implementation of decisions from the different COPs (UNFCCC, CBD and CITES) will be at the forefront of conservation related conversations both globally and nationally.

Scope of work:

The Consultant is expected to carry out the following tasks:

  3. To engage in supporting WWF Africa engagement in some of the identified key policy priorities (COP28, AMCEN, UNEA, etc.) (Coordination role – junior consultant) continuous

In addition to these roles, the Junior consultant will provide support to the following key tasks within the Unit:

  • Support engagement with WWF Africa’s institutional partners including the AfDB, NEPAD Agency, the African Union Commission, the Regional Economic Communities (East African Community, Southern Africa Development Community, Economic Community of Central African States);
