NORCE

Bergen, Norway 🇳🇴

Norce

NORCE is a forward-looking research institute, with expertise in a wide range of fields and strong communities of knowledge. We deliver research and innovation in energy, health care, climate, the environment, society and technology.

Our solutions address key challenges for society and contribute to value creation on the local, national and global levels.

About the position

We are offering a 3-year Postdoctoral Position in the field of climate change adaptation and services. The position is available within the Impetus for Change (I4C) project, which aims to improve the quality, accessibility and usability of near-term climate information and services at local to regional scales to strengthen and support end-user adaptation planning and action.

The position will be based in Bergen at NORCE Climate and Environment, which is affiliated with the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR). NORCE Climate and Environment division has approximately 60 researchers conducting both basic and applied research on the past, present, and future climate system, on anthropogenic climate change, its impact on society, and on the feasibility of climate change mitigation options. BCCR is the largest climate research centre in the Nordic countries and among the leading centres in Europe. The working environment is highly international with around 200 scientists from 37 countries.

About I4C project

I4C is an exciting new research project financed by the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme (grant nr. 101081555). Recent years have witnessed important advances in weather and climate predictions on time scales of weeks to seasons, as well as in our understanding of long-term projections of climate change, in particular from the middle to the end of the 21st century. Despite improvements, predictions of climate from multi-annual to decadal time scales remain challenging as do practices for making such information usable and actionable on the ground. In this context, I4C aims to improve the quality, accessibility and usability of near-term climate information and services at local to regional scales – where impacts are most keenly felt and on-the-ground adaptation is implemented – to strengthen and support end-user adaptation planning action.

This position will focus on the area of knowledge networks (KN) as catalysts for change in the implementation of adaptation actions towards societal transformation. As part of an interdisciplinary team, you will conduct research to address interconnected and overarching research questions, including:

  • What KN operate within the field of climate change adaptation in Europe? How do the KNs govern themselves?
  • How do different KNs support and push for climate change adaptation policy and action?
  • How to tailor near-term climate predictions to fit the needs of actors within the KNs?
  • How to support and improve the actions of individual actors in the KNs to achieve better systemic- level impact on climate adaptation?

The research position is expected to support and contribute to the assessment of existing KN for climate change adaptation in Europe as well as the in-depth analysis of the ICLEI Europe Knowledge Network.

Your work tasks

  • Collaborating with other project members in the delivery of work package 1 on ‘Knowledge networks towards societal transformation’ as well as with other relevant work packages.
  • Pursue a literature review of current KN operating in the climate change adaptation field in Europe.
  • Conduct in-depth interviews and/or focus group discussions with ICLEI actors.
  • Analysing and interpreting the results of research.
  • Preparing project deliverables and presentations in a timely manner.
  • Contribute to research and papers to be published in high-impact peer-reviewed journals.
  • Effectively communicate pertinent research findings with the consortium.
  • Disseminate research findings to the research community and the broader public through activities organised by the project.

Required skills, expertise and experience

  • A PhD in environmental and/or social sciences.
  • A strong background and expertise in climate change adaptation, co-production and stakeholder engagement, preferably in Europe.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including a demonstrated capacity to undertake research and write it up in publishable form and an ability to write clearly and accessibly in English for academic and policy audiences.
  • A proven track record of peer-reviewed publications in high impact factor journals and presentations at international conferences.
